El representante especial adjunto de la ONU para Haití, Nigel Fisher, defendió ayer el ritmo de reconstrucción que vive el país desde el devastador terremoto de 2010 y señaló que las tareas de desescombro son incluso más rápidas que las realizadas en la zona cero de Nueva York tras el 11-S. “Muchos de los escombros dejados por el terremoto siguen ahí, pero casi el 50 por ciento ya se ha recogido. Cinco millones de metros cúbicos de escombros se han retirado,
lo que muestra más rapidez que por ejemplo en el World Trade Center tras el 11-S”, explicó Fisher ante la prensa en la sede central de la ONU. El representante especial del organismo defendió así las tareas de desescombro realizadas en la operación a gran escala de la ONU y sus socios, coordinada por el Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD), además de las llevadas a cabo por los propietarios de las viviendas y las empresas privadas. Además de hacer referencia a las tareas de desescombro llevadas a cabo en Nueva York tras los atentados contra las Torres Gemelas hace diez años, Fisher dijo que el trabajo en Haití va a un ritmo más rápido también que en lugares como la provincia de Aceh en Indonesia, afectada por el tsunami de 2004.“Allí se necesitaron cinco años y medio para retirar 1,3 millones de metros cúbicos de escombros y basura”, añadió el funcionario de la ONU, quien se mostró alentado por el ritmo que en general muestra la reconstrucción de Haití, un país que en enero de 2010 perdió más de 220.000 habitantes por la catástrofe del terremoto.
Fisher tildó de “mito” el hecho de que se diga que “no hay ningún tipo de reconstrucción en Haití”, donde señaló que hay “varios proyectos clave en marcha” y donde se cuenta con “suficiente inversión para garantizar la creación de 20.000 nuevos puestos de trabajo y donde se busca ahora más inversores".
“El objetivo es aumentar esa cifra hasta los 60.000 empleos, un objetivo realista y asequible”, indicó, al tiempo que garantizó que Haití experimenta mejoras a diario en todas las áreas, incluida la educación, la vivienda, la reconstrucción de infraestructuras y el tratamiento de la epidemia del cólera.
